Where to Watch Football in Charleston: Red Palm Tavern

This week, six of us made our way over to Red Palm Tavern for football Sunday! It was kind of on a whim because other plans fell through, but sometimes those are the best days. This one proved to be no different, as Red Palm wound up topping my list of places to watch football in Charleston so far! Red Palm recently opened on Romney Street, right next to Kickin Chicken, and offers an impressive space, a wood-fired oven, and that “new spot” energy and service.

Highlights & Standout Features —

Free Chips - Who doesn’t love a freebie when you sit down, whether it’s aperitivo hour in Italy or chips and salsa at a Mexican spot? Red Palm dishes out free kettle-cooked potato chips, and since we were starving when we arrived, it was a great surprise!

Excellent Layout - The layout of Red Palm is definitely one of my favorite things about it! It boasts a massive wraparound indoor/outdoor bar, a covered patio area with large dining tables and free-standing chairs, and a spacious indoor dining area with booths, high-tops, and a pool table. TVs are spread throughout, including a large projector screen inside.

Decor - The decor gives off cozy, lodge-like cabin vibes, which is my personal favorite aesthetic during fall and football season. The brick walls are adorned with animal heads and antiquely-framed artwork while classic light fixtures hang from the ceiling.

Pool Table - I love when a bar offers alternative activities for those who may be there to support their fellow football lovers but want something else to keep them entertained or moving around. The pool table in the center of the indoor bar area is a great feature.

Wood-Fire Oven - Much of the food is cooked using a wood-fire oven, which you can see when you walk into the restaurant. It’s a cool feature that also contributes to the cozy fall vibes.

Dog Friendly - There was no shortage of pups on the outdoor patio and I can’t think of a better combination than dogs and football!

Location - Red Palm is conveniently located next to Kickin’ Chicken and near Home Team BBQ, so if you want to switch up locations at halftime or if you find there’s not enough space at one spot, you can easily transfer to another.

Considerations to Know Before You Go —

Bar Seating - Seats at the bar are a popular choice because it’s honestly such a cool spot with views of multiple TVs. While they’re plentiful, they do fill up fast and were almost entirely full when we got there around 1 PM! If you want a prime-time spot at the bar itself, get there early to claim it; otherwise, you’ll find plenty of other seating options on the covered patio or indoors.

Food is Just Okay - We’ll need to go back and try more of the menu, but for the most part, the food from this visit was just okay. I will say they have a lot of options, though, so it’s possible we just didn’t make the right choices. If you have a recommendation, let me know for next time! :)

Tips & Recommendations —

  • Get the cornflake chicken tenders! While most of the bites we tried were just okay, this was a standout. Everyone at our table ordered and loved them.

I feel like this is becoming a repeat tip, but get there early if you want to watch a specific game to ensure the best view!

With a 4.9 rating on Google, it appears I’m not alone in my love for Red Palm. This was a noteworthy and memorable spot, and I’ll definitely be heading back soon! This whole neighborhood is a great one to visit on football Sunday, as you can bop around and change up your scenery as you please—maybe even partake in a little Sunday football food crawl!
